Certificate in Local Governance for Councillors

SEE, in partnership with London South Bank University [LSBU], has developed a pilot Certificate in Local Governance for Councillors. Participants for the certificate will be drawn from constituent authorities in the South East and London Councils (previously ALG).

The programme will comprise four units each consisting of two modules taught at LSBU. Each of the four Units will comprise 45 hours made up of 36 hours contact time and nine for assessment.

The South East Charter for Elected Member Development

The Charter for Elected Member Development has been developed in partnership with the IDeA and is based on the North West Employers’ Charter, building on the experience of their well established and successful regional Member Development Charter which all councils in that region have made a commitment to.

SEE is also leading on the Charter for Elected Member Development of the 54 councils in the Eastern Region.

In the South East region 19 councils have committed to the Charter and 3 have been awarded Charter status. Thirteen councils in the Eastern Region have committed to the Charter and 2 have been awarded Charter status.

Effective Chairing Skills

This SEE course is aimed at enabling Councillors to consider all aspects of the Chairman’s role in meetings and encouraging them to devise practical ways of developing their performance in this area.

Effective Meetings Booklet

A booklet written particularly for Councillors which covers all aspects of meetings. It aims to help members prepare for meetings, develop a range of effective meeting skills and gives some ideas and tips for public speaking.

The New Councillor's Induction & Survival Guide 2007
This guide aims to provide basic general information for the newly elected councillor. It covers the structure and workings of local government, from both the national and regional perspectives, with information on the main issues and the key players. The guide also contains prompts for local details and information, to be inserted by the local authority. The guide can also be used by councils in their induction sessions, providing information in "easy to digest" chunks.

The guide is reviewed and updated annually. Two CD roms are sent annually to each member authority; additional copies cost £25 each + VAT, including postage & packing.
