MEMBER DEVELOPMENT CHARTER

Last month saw the publication of the final report and recommendations from the Councillors Commission. A copy of the report is available at http://www.communities.gov.uk/councillorscommission/. Recommendations include action to• boost understanding of local government and the role of councillors • attract new and more diverse candidates to stand in local elections• deliver better quality support to those elected The report also commends the work carried out in relation to the Member Development Charter.

SEE is promoting the Charter across this Region and also on behalf of the East of England. So far, we have 47 councils signed up to the Charter, with 7 having successfully achieved Charter status.

Our congratulations go to: Bracknell Forest BC, East Sussex CC, Elmbridge BC, Spelthorne BC and Isle of Wight Council, all in the South East, and Broadland DC and St Edmundsbury Council in the East of England.

Further information on the Charter and on member development in general is available from Mark Palmer at mark@seemp.co.uk.
