Certificate in Internal Workplace Mediation – accredited qualification (5 days)
This 5-day training course continues to be an outstanding success. In November we ran a course in Dover for 12 delegates from 3 Kent Councils which was very well received. The latest course, held at SEE offices in Winchester in early February, was again an intense 5 days, but the feedback from the delegates was, without exception, excellent.
Feedback included:
“the whole course was interesting and well presented”
“brilliant course - great active learning”
“tutors were completely switched on to our needs and met them”
“excellent balance of exercises, discussion, input and practice”
“very good tutors with real and useful experiences”
“best course I have attended in a very long while”
"friendly, 'safe' environment"
Dates for 2010:
10 - 14 May 2010 at the SEE Office, Winchester
Cost:
SEE Members: £1,500 + VAT per delegate
Non-members: £1,995 + VAT per delegate
We can also arrange in-house courses for a minimum of 8 trainees if required.
Course Details:
The Certificate in Internal Workplace Mediation is designed by Acas and delivered by Acas and SEE jointly to give participants the opportunity to gain knowledge and practical skills to enable them to operate effectively as mediators in their own organisations.
The certificate is awarded to participants who have successfully demonstrated their knowledge, understanding and skills of workplace conflict, mediation and managing the mediation process. Broadly, the award is equivalent to Level 3 NVQ, although the stages within the award do not correspond to National Qualification Framework levels. Assessment of participants’ skills, via role plays, will be carried out by Acas and SEE assessors; and knowledge, via a written portfolio will be carried out by Acas, with external verification by OCR.
The Certificate certifies that the holder is competent to mediate in the organisation for which s/he works providing the organisation is satisfied that the holder is regularly updating their skills and knowledge and keeping a record of their continuing professional development record of this.
Target audience:
The programme is aimed at individuals who wish to become internal mediators in the workplace. It is also suitable for people who are already working as internal mediators, and who wish to formalise their skills and knowledge.
Course content:
The course consists of 5 units and will take place over 5 days. The units are:
- Unit 1: Understanding Conflict and Mediation In the Workplace
- Unit 2: Introducing the Parties to Mediation
- Unit 3: Moving Through the Mediation Process
- Unit 4: Skills and Strategies for Managing the Mediation Process
- Unit 5: Practising Mediation Skills
Acas and SEE will use a variety of learning styles and methods to meet the needs of participants. This will include tutor input sessions, tutor led discussions, workshops, syndicate exercises, group exercises and role plays. There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions and time to develop individual learning needs.
Learning outcomes:
Participants should be able to:
- understand the costs and effects of workplace conflict
- be able to identify when internal workplace mediation is appropriate
- be able to demonstrate the skills and behaviours needed to be an effective mediator
- know the mediation model and the key tasks of stage
- be able to manage the mediation process effectively and confidently
Entry requirements:
There will be no formal entry requirements. The suitability for entry to the course will be assessed by the employing organisation in discussion with the Acas or SEE trainer/assessor. Useful pre-requisites are effective skills in oral communication along with the ability to develop empathy and build rapport. It is expected that participants will have a positive approach to the idea of helping people resolve their disputes with each other and will be fully committed to the ethos and principles of mediation.
Prior to the course participants who have been accepted will need to complete a form to provide background information about their knowledge, experience and attitudes towards the mediation process.
Achieving the award:
Assessment will be on the basis of written evidence and completed assessor records of observed skills practice. All the knowledge, skills and understanding required to gain the certificate is covered on the course, but participants would benefit their own self-development by including reference to their own experience and wider reading. Participants will need to present completed units within one month of completing the course.
A participant who does not meet the full requirements of the award cannot be given certification. Any participants who fail to meet the requirements will be given feedback and an appropriate period of time to meet the expected standards. Acas and SEE can provide further training as necessary and would charge accordingly.
Quality assurance:
In order to meet the terms of its accreditation by OCR the course is subject to strict quality assurance standards which include twice yearly external verification by OCR. In addition all courses are comprehensively evaluated by Acas and SEE to ensure learning objectives and customer needs are met.
