Councillor Mentoring Programmes

Here at SEE, we have developed Mentoring Programmes specifically for Councillors in response to requests from elected members. They have told us they need:

  • confidence building for new councillors
  • to develop further their leadership skills including their community leadership role
  • support for new roles (e.g. Cabinet, Scrutiny Chairman etc)
  • support for particular political, community or leadership challenges
  • support when building new skills such as community engagement or media relations
  • guidance for those wishing to advance in their political career
  • to know how to work effectively with officers.

We offer a range of programmes and support including:

Setting up your own councillor mentoring programme

A two day programme to train the officers who will support the councillor mentoring programme.

Being a councillor mentor

A one day course to equip mentors with the knowledge and skills to ensure councillors and their mentees get the most from this learning and development opportunity.

Being a councillor mentee

A one day course designed to encourage councillors to think about their needs as a mentee, how to work effectively with a mentor, how to manage independent feedback and how to plan to get the most out of the partnership.

Running your councillor mentoring programme

We already have the structure, systems and processes at our disposal and can work with you to set up and manage your programme, providing marketing, training, matching, follow up and evaluation.

We can tailor these programmes to suit your councillors and can run sessions for political groups, executive members and community champions.

For further information on any of the mentoring programme please email Janine Gill or call 01962 840664.
