New Role of the Councillor

This workshop targeted at new councillors will focus on the ‘New Role of the Councillor’. The programme will look at how the council works the councillor’s role and the emerging future issues and priorities that will impact on the role of the councillor e.g. Localism Act 2011, Big Society and ensuring value for money outcomes. This workshop will be bespoke to reflect your council and the key issues within the local community.

By the end of the workshop, Councillors will be able to:

• have a clearer understanding of how the council works including political management arrangements, managing meetings and the councillor-officer relationship
• understand the councillors role in respect of representing the ward, community leadership and engagement, decision- making and policy and strategy
• identify the relationship between the Council and the party group structure
• see the potential of overview and scrutiny to exert influence
• understand the implications of the Localism agenda on the role of the councillor.
