By using case studies and group work, you will practise the skills required to develop the strategic leadership role of councillors as both executive and scrutiny members and community leaders within your wards.

• What do we mean by “strategic leadership” and “community leadership”?
• Impact of the political structures - executive, scrutiny, representational and community role on the leadership dimension
• Balance between leadership and community engagement and consultation
• Identifying when leadership is required and different leadership styles
• A checklist of key skills and competencies required for effective political leadership
