LAA Top 10 Indicators – Sport, Obesity, Walking and Cycling
Tuesday 9th December, Central London – 10am-4pm.
Among the top 10 indicators agreed in South East LAAs, three stand out as being uniquely inter-linked:
NI8 Adult participation in sport and active recreation
NI56 Obesity among primary school age children in Year 6
NI175 Access to services and facilities by public transport, walking and cycling
Every South East LAA selected at least one of these with most including two or all three.
The links are obvious – health, sport, physical activity, and shifting car users to walking and cycling are intimately connected in terms of the social and economic costs and benefits, and the measures for changing citizens’ behaviour. They also play to popular concerns the public can relate to. But nationally they are led by a variety of Government departments whose strategies around each issue while reflective of the links, are nonetheless separate. Locally, despite strategies with partnership sign-up, action can still get funneled into local silos of schools, transport planning, leisure services or public health – not to mention issues around two-tier working and co-terminousity.
This workshop will bring together all those involved in delivering LAA NI 8, NI 56, and NI 175 from top-tier and district authorities – along with experts and government officials from within the region. The objective will be to exchange approaches, share best practice and identify new opportunities for linking-up efforts around these related National Indicators.
