Why it's great to work in local government

15 January 2025 | Sarah Cope

Let’s be honest, local government rarely gets the big, shiny spotlight. When things go well, it can be invisible. When things go wrong, everyone notices.

But if you want work that actually matters, the kind where you can say “I helped make that happen”, local government is one of the best places to be.

Councils shape everyday life, often in ways people only realise when it is not there. Keeping communities safe, supporting vulnerable residents, planning homes, running libraries, protecting public health, keeping parks and high streets thriving, making sure the basics work. That is real life stuff.

That’s exactly what the national Make a Difference, Work for Your Local Council campaign is shining a light on, the impact, variety and career opportunities across local councils.

You can see your impact, close to home

The best thing about council work is the “why” is built in. You are not just shifting tasks around a spreadsheet. You are helping real people, in real places, often in ways you can actually see.

One day it’s helping a family get housing support. Another day it’s improving road safety near a school. It might be supporting local businesses, keeping food standards high, or helping essential services keep running when the pressure is on. You go home knowing your work has a point, and that’s not something every job can offer.

There are more roles than most people realise

People still imagine councils as one job in one office doing one thing forever. Honestly, that is miles off.

Councils are packed with specialist roles and teams, and the campaign highlights there are over 800 different jobs within a council. Frontline services, digital, finance, project delivery, communications, legal, HR, planning, environmental health, housing, IT, policy, customer services, and loads more.

So whether you are starting out, returning to work, changing direction, or ready to step up, there is usually a route in.

You can grow your career, not just hold a job

Local government is constantly evolving, new legislation, new expectations, new challenges, and that means councils need people who keep learning. In practice, that often looks like proper development opportunities, training, qualifications, apprenticeships, professional memberships, and progression that does not require you to leave the sector just to move forward. You can build a career here, not just do a stint.

Flexible and inclusive working is part of the offer

Councils know that good work is done by people with real lives. Many councils work hard to offer flexible and inclusive working arrangements, because they want to attract and keep great people.

For lots of us, flexibility is not a “nice to have”. It is what makes work possible alongside caring responsibilities, health needs, study, or simply wanting a life outside the job.

You’re joining a sector that needs talent, and values it

Local government is under pressure, demand for services is rising, and recruitment and retention is a challenge across the country. That sounds daunting, but it also means opportunity. Councils need people who bring energy, ideas, and skills. People who want to improve how things are done, not just keep the wheels turning. If that sounds like you, you will be valued.

Make a Difference, Work for Your Local Council

The national campaign runs 5 January 2026 to 15 February 2026, backed by major advertising across billboards, radio, podcasts, social and online. If you’re curious, the campaign website is a good starting point to explore roles near you and get a feel for the range of opportunities.

Thinking of applying? Awesome, here’s a simple way to start

  • Look at roles by theme, not just job title (helping people, improving places, keeping communities safe).
  • Match your transferable skills (customer service, project coordination, data, planning, stakeholder work, problem solving).
  • In your personal statement, focus on outcomes, what you improved, changed, delivered, or made easier.
  • Be clear on your motivation, councils want people who care about public service and community impact.

Working in local government is meaningful, varied, and full of chances to make things better, sometimes in small ways, sometimes in big ones. If you want purpose, variety, and a job where your effort has a clear impact, it might be time to take a proper look at what your local council has to offer.
